A man who illegally dispensed a drug containing sildenafil to his local drugstore was arrested after authorities said the prescription was for the drug Viagra, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Roughly 10 minutes after receiving his shipment of sildenafil, the man was arrested at a pharmacy.
The man was charged with three counts of possession with intent to sell, and one count of possession with intent to sell, the police report said.
Sildenafil, which is in a class of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors, is the active ingredient in Viagra and works by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down drugs. It can be used to treat both erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension, the police report said.
The man's arrest comes as Pfizer is increasingly worried about rising erectile dysfunction drugs.
In its report, the New York attorney general, Eric Holder, said the company "continues to take note of the rise of erectile dysfunction drugs and is working with law enforcement agencies around the country to take action against those who distribute and sell such drugs."
Pfizer said in a statement that it was "reviewing the potential for an increase in the use of sildenafil to treat pulmonary hypertension and is working with law enforcement partners to respond to the potential risks" of this use.
"Pulmonary hypertension is a serious condition that affects both men and their ability to exercise, and sildenafil is associated with significant increases in this condition," the statement said.
The FDA approved sildenafil for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension in 1998, but it has been used off-label for other conditions, including erectile dysfunction.
Sildenafil can interact with other drugs, the company said.
